Meter Box & Main Switchboard (MSB) Replacement Brisbane

120+ switchboard projects completed · 5.0★ Google rating · Licensed electrical contractor (Lic. 90334)

Old meter boxes and main switchboards (MSBs) are behind many of the problems we see in Brisbane buildings – nuisance tripping, no room for new meters, asbestos backing boards and panels that fail an Energex or metering inspection. We replace meter panels and main switchboards for body corporates, commercial complexes and homes, and we manage the Energex, retailer and metering paperwork so the changeover happens in one planned outage.

Planning a body corporate or multi-tenancy upgrade? We regularly install new main switchboards with bulk metering – see our Tingalpa bulk-metering case study.

Why replace your meter box or main switchboard
  • Stop nuisance tripping and overloads

When a building’s demand has outgrown its main switchboard or consumer mains, the MSB is often the bottleneck. A properly sized replacement restores capacity for every unit or tenancy.

  • Meet Energex and metering requirements

Meter panels must meet the Queensland Electricity Connection and Metering Manual (QECM). Boards with no room for new meters, damaged enclosures or asbestos panels often have to be replaced before a meter can be changed or a new connection approved.

  • Ready for bulk metering, solar and EV

A new MSB can be laid out for bulk or embedded metering, solar and battery connections and EV charging circuits, so the building isn’t held back by its main board.

When does a meter box or main switchboard need replacing?

  • Ceramic fuses, or porcelain or asbestos (“zelemite”) backing panels in the meter box
  • No room for an additional or smart meter, or a meter change rejected by the metering provider
  • Nuisance tripping or overloaded consumer mains across the whole building
  • Rust, water ingress, heat damage or burning smells at the main switchboard
  • A move to bulk metering, a new tenancy needing more power, or adding solar or EV charging
  • A main switch room that no longer meets AS/NZS 3000 clearance and access requirements

Our meter box and MSB replacement process

  1. Free on-site inspection – we check the meter panel, main switchboard, consumer mains and the load the building draws.
  2. Fixed quote and scope – including expected Energex, retailer and metering fees and the planned outage length.
  3. Energex and metering applications – we lodge the paperwork and coordinate the metering provider so meters are removed and reinstalled on the day.
  4. Planned changeover – residents or tenants are notified, and we can work after hours or bring in temporary power for critical loads.
  5. Testing and certification – every circuit is tested and a Certificate of Testing and Safety is issued.

Energex, retailers and metering – what to expect

Most meter box and main switchboard replacements need a supply disconnection and reconnection by Energex, plus new or relocated meters from the site’s metering provider. Lead times for these bookings drive the timeline, so we lodge them as soon as the quote is accepted and confirm the outage date and duration up front.

What affects the cost

  • Number of meters and tenancies (single home vs bulk-metered complex)
  • Whether consumer mains need upgrading or the board must be relocated
  • Asbestos panel removal and enclosure type
  • After-hours work and temporary power

    • Tingalpa commercial complex: emergency MSB and bulk metering

After a loss of supply, the complex’s switchboard was found unsafe to repair. We sourced a replacement board and had it installed 7 days after the power loss – a job that would normally take around 12 weeks – saving the owner weeks of generator hire.

    • Riverhills townhouses: mains capacity and MSB upgrade

Constant tripping across a 29-unit townhouse complex was fixed with a consumer mains and main switchboard upgrade – no further tripping since.

Meter box and main switchboard replacement FAQs

Have more questions that aren’t answered here?

Our friendly team are here to help out with any questions you might have.

    • Who is responsible for the meter box – the owner or Energex?

The meters belong to the metering provider, but the meter box or panel, main switch and wiring are the property owner’s (or body corporate’s) responsibility. If the panel is damaged, unsafe or has no room for new meters, the owner needs a licensed electrician to replace it.

    • How long will the power be off?

A single-dwelling meter box replacement usually needs a few hours without power. Larger main switchboard changeovers are planned around the building – we confirm the outage length in the quote and can work after hours or provide temporary power.

    • Do I need to replace an asbestos meter board?

Not always. But if meters are being added or changed, the board is being upgraded or the panel is damaged, the asbestos backing is usually replaced – we arrange safe removal as part of the job.

    • Can you convert our building to bulk metering?

Yes. We design and install the new main switchboard and metering layout and coordinate the metering provider and Energex – see our Tingalpa case study.

    • How much does a meter box or main switchboard replacement cost?

It depends on the number of meters, whether mains need upgrading or the board relocating, and any asbestos removal. We provide a free inspection and fixed quote – see our cost guide for typical ranges.
